5 ways wearables must change to make us healthier in 2015

Many of us bought fitness wearables in 2014. We counted our steps, our distance walked, our quality sleep time. But almost as many of us probably ended up abandoning our new devices before we’d worn them even a month.
Fitness-tracking devices, like this one from S2H, can help motivate employees toward better health.
Because my job involves testing many of these devices, I’ve been through the adopt-and-abandon cycle several times over. I had hoped that one of these devices would stick — that I would continue wearing it and benefit from the so-called “actionable insights” gained from the data. But they all ended up in the junk drawer.
Here are some of the reasons that happens, and what needs to change to keep the wearable revolution headed in the right direction.

They need better functionality

Many fitness wearables on the market now are just accelerometers wrapped in a piece of plastic. The very limited set of features and functions that this enables is perfectly built for people who are OK with using a wearable for a couple of weeks then giving up. Many of these devices are so inexpensive that this loser of a use case can be a money maker for the manufacturer. But as the wearables market becomes saturated in 2015 this will be a tougher sell.
Many users will already have purchased (and thrown away) their first wearable, and will expect far more from their second one. In the last couple of months, we’ve seen wearables companies like FitBit and Jawbone begin to release devices that have more sensors and more refined algorithms for making sense of biometrics data.
The inclusion of a heartbeat monitor will become table stakes for wearables in the next year. They will not all be accurate, but consumers will begin to expect them. Manufacturers are also beginning to build smartwatch-like features (like notifications from a paired smartphone) into fitness wearables.

They need to be comfortable

This may sound fussy, but it’s a big deal. You’re asking me to wear your amazing device around day in and day out, even while I’m at the gym or in bed. So the thing has to be light, and it has to be comfortable. Many wearables simply are not comfortable on the wrist.
For instance, I was initially impressed with the Microsoft Band, but I eventually stopped wearing it because it felt to hard and blocky around my wrist. Plus, the touchscreen on the Band becomes very unresponsive when covered with perspiration.
Smartwatch makers need to take a deeper look into the materials available for watch bands, and get more creative about selecting them.

They should look good

Many wearables that entered the market this year were focused on hitting a low price point. For instanceXiaomi’s Mi Band sells at $13. Aesthetic appeal hasn’t been a priority, and cheaper wearables often look plasticky and toy-like.
Meanwhile, top-end fitness watches and smartwatches are often big and blocky. Part of that is an aesthetic problem, but part of it is a technical one. As more and more features and functions are built in to these devices, larger component parts, such as bigger batteries, are needed to run them. That’s why they’re bigger.
The lithium ion battery won’t be able to deliver the capacity improvements needed to get us through the smartwatch revolution. Manufacturers need to double down on power supply R&D and come up with some viable alternatives. This problem alone could kill the smartwatch category.

The numbers need to add up to something

At any one time I’m using several health devices, like a connected scale, a nutrition tracker, a sleep tracker, and a fitness band. I can open all the apps that accompany these devices and peruse all the numbers they’ve collected about my steps, deep sleep minutes, my calendars, etc. But what do I do with this data?
Too often wearables generate a lot of data, but they don’t give me contextual information I need to put the data to use. A device might give me my resting heart rate, but chances are it doesn’t know enough about me to tell me when my heart range has entered the danger zone. A dangerous rate for me, after all, might be perfectly fine for an athlete in training, or a life-threatening rate for someone who is morbidly obese.
I hope that smartwatch makers in 2015 will think of better ways to wrap enough contextual information around the numbers to make it all meaningful.

The apps should be easier to use

Some of the apps that accompany wearable devices are so poorly designed that it’s difficult to even see and make sense of the data they’ve collected. If the app is hard to read and understand, the device is basically useless. Since biometrics data is often best presented in charts and graphs, the app must make careful use of screen space to display it properly. Often, this doesn’t happen.
The numbers show that the market for health and fitness wearables is set to expand rapidly in 2015. As one wearable brand CEO told me, the devices are so easy and inexpensive to make, and the market is so ripe, he’d be crazy not to sell health wearables.
Hopefully, pure competition will weed the weak players out of the market, and new, more feature-rich and comfortable wearables will emerge.

A simple problem has been stumping wearable device makers. Customers buy their shiny fitness trackers, show them off to friends, and then wear them religiously for maybe a month or two. Not long after, many get bored and throw the gadgets in a drawer. How do you motivate customers to keep wearing these wrist bands, to the point they might even pay for future services?
Fitbit thinks the answer is to share your fitness data with friends, stoking your competitive urges. Samsung has packed its Gear Fit with a sophisticated heart rate sensor. And well aware that most fitness trackers are ugly, Jawbone offers a more stylish alternative with the Up.
None of these approaches involve connecting you to another human being.
Menlo Park-based GOQii thinks the answer lies in using real, live personal trainers, and crucially, it can get them for low prices by outsourcing to Mumbai, India.
GOQii gives its trackers away for free, and charges $99 for a six-month service of daily texting with a coach that analyzes users’ data, and calls them once a month.

Gaming entrepreneur and GOQii founder Vishal Gondal got the idea two years ago when his own personal trainer started looking at his Fitbit data to help him set reasonable goals, and eventually set Gondal on the path to running half marathons.
Today Gondal shows off the messages from his new personal trainer, a full-time GOQii coach in Mumbai named Swapnil. Earlier this morning he texted Gondal via the GOQii app on his phone to ask how he’d slept.
“Feeling tired,” Gondal had replied. “Should I get a Red Bull ?”
“No,” Swapnil answered, adding that Gondal should try drinking some natural carrot juice with a shot of ginger.
There’s one last message from the coach: “Did you get time for a run?” Swapnil can’t read Gondal’s GPS data, but can see that he hasn’t taken very many steps that day.
Gondal now looks sheepish. “I haven’t run so I haven’t replied to the message. This is playing in my mind that I have to reply.” He stares at the message for a moment. “Ok I’ll tell him now.” Gondal’s thumbs fly across his Nokia phone. “Yes. Running tomorrow for sure,” he tells Swapnil.
It’s arguably easy to brush off a coach that’s thousands of miles away, but Gondal insists his coaches don’t use scripts or boilerplate answers, and are encouraged to be themselves. The idea is to create a bond with their users strong enough to play on their minds, as Gondal’s did. Each coach will eventually have between 100 and 150 customers to look after.
GOQii’s Mumbai team of roughly 50 coaches work from 10am till 6pm in an open-plan office filled with gym equipment, organic food and spaces to do high-intensity workouts like tabata, but they spend most of their time staring a numbers and charts for user steps and calorie intake.
Each coach has a background in personal fitness and has spent around two months studying a 118-page manual with chapters on nutrition and even cognitive behavioral therapy.


From this April, they’ll start coaching around 1,000 people in India, all taking part in a beta phase for GOQii. The company plans to start selling its service in the United States at the end of this year, likely for more than what it charges in India, and by then have hundreds of coaches.


Remote fitness coaching is nothing new. Sessions, which connects users with individual trainers, recently got bought out by MyFitnessPal. Chicago-based RetroFit also pairs fitness and nutrition experts with customers, but it charges a minimum $250 per month. Gondal keeps costs low by capitalizing on the experience of local staff in “business process outsourcing,” hiring managers in India from IBM IBM +1.98% and Wipro WIT +1.87%.


“It’s the perfect combination of man and machine,” he says. One other intriguing part of GOQii is its philanthropic play. Users earn one “karma” point for every 350 steps taken, and when donated to a charity like Oxfam the points are converted into cash, thanks to a cadre of corporate and individual donors. “When you do something for others you feel a lot more satisfied,” Gondal says. “That’s why you see people doing marathons supporting causes.”


GOQii has raised “a few million” in angel funding from names like Amit Singhal, Google’s head of search, and Flextronics CEO Mike McNamara, and Gondal is working his Valley networks to raise a Series A round. “Our challenge is not hardware but getting the training done.”


Indeed, the GOQii device itself is a relatively ordinary plastic wrap-around band with a small, pop-out screen that shows a count for calories and steps, manufactured in Shenzen, China. It costs Gondal far more to train his coaches than make the device, which seems to act as a showcase more than anything for the training system. Eventually, Gondal wants his coaches to be monitoring customers via Fitbits, Galaxy Fits and the health-focused wrist band that Apple is expected to launch in the coming months.


“In the future we’re going to have a tsunami of personal data coming up,” Gondal says. “We’re creating a new breed of professionals whose job is to decipher human data and guide people.”

Pebble To Developers: Get Ready To Rock With New Wearable Tech Tools

When the Pebble smartwatch hit the market earlier this year, it hewed to a "simple is best" philosophy, offering only a limited set of features. But the company also pledged to help others develop their own creative uses for the gadget, and it's now followed through with a more fully fledged set of developer tools and better iOS 7 integration.
The latter should interest iPhone users who want Twitter, Facebook, Skype or other alerts on their Pebble watches with a minimum of fuss. But the new software development kit, or SDK, should pique the interest of Pebble developers, particularly those itching to explore niches such as health monitoring, remote home security, automation and a variety of other futuristic features.
As Pebble founder Eric Migicovsky put it: “We’ve given them access to the sensors.” 
Sensors lie at the heart of "cool tech" innovations these days. Want to know what your heart rate is during that run? Flip the lights and TV on as soon as you come through the door? That's the work of sensors, and Pebble has them, including an accelerometer and magnetometer. And that means you may soon be able to monitor or control gadgets around you easily and conveniently, all from a watch strapped to your arm. 
Pebble's Kit And Kaboodle
Pebble launched with little more than a basic—dare I say charming?—e-paper display and a handful of features. The device handled alarms, music controls, some watch faces and alerts for email, call and texts from iPhones and Android handsets. Likewise, Pebble's first SDK was also rather minimal, allowing developers to customize watch faces or to nix backlighting or vibrations and not much else.
 Subsequent updates, along with a snazzy new sports API, made things a bit more interesting, offering support for two-way Bluetooth communication between the smartwatch and the paired smartphone. And apps likeRunkeeper and FreeCaddie joined the party, essentially turning the device into a wearable fitness gadget. 
Now version 2 ups the game, turning the Pebble into much more of a, well, platform. As Migicovsky told me last month, "It’s an open platform, which means anyone and everyone can hack on top of Pebble."
So Migicovsky has put his SDK where his mouth is. With the sensors available—including a 3-axis accelerometer with gesture detection—app developers have chance to dig in and dial up the innovation. 
There's a lot of buzz around sensors—hardware designed to detect changes in things like location, movement, light or temperature, among other things. One of the company's early partners includes iControl, whose technology powers new home-automation services from Time Warner Cable and Comcast Xfinity. The company is working on a Pebble app, says Migicovsky, so customers can see data about their home on their watch and even perform some basic tasks. 
 
Imagine Pebble sensors working with Apple's geo-fencing API, so your home can sense when you've arrived and unlock your garage or front door, play your favorite playlist when you shake your arm, or automatically shut down your WiFi network when you've left the house.

In the context of a Pebblefied world, where things like smartphone GPS can join forces with arm gestures, a flick of a wrist can summon cool suggestions of activities to do in the area. Why not? That's a feature Yelp is working on. And it's not alone; others working on Pebble features include Foursquare and GoPro.
"For each of these apps," Migicovsky told me Monday, "there’s a small micro interaction, a small bit of data that can be lifted from the smartphone and used by Pebble." 

Pebble also flipped the switch on Bluetooth Low Energy, adding that to its older, more stable Bluetooth connection profile. That means new features have better odds of not sucking batteries dry. 

iPhone Users Get Good Vibrations—Lots Of Them
 
Of course, it will take time for new apps and Pebble-compatible features to arrive. Meanwhile, some customers can take heart in the new iOS notifications Pebble has just enabled.
Android users had more control over vibration alerts than iPhone users, either via the official Pebble app or third-party programs like Pebble Notifier. But now Pebble has just leveled the field. Similar to the jailbroken app BTNotificationEnabler, the new iOS Pebble app update "finally supports the full suite of notifications that show up in the top part of the phone," Migicovsky says.
By taking advantage of the Apple Notification Center Service (ANCS)—which allows Bluetooth accessories to access those notifications—Pebble is giving people the opportunity to field an array of alerts on their Pebbles, from social networks to game apps and more. 
The updated Pebble app has already been submitted to the App Store, so users will be able to get their hands on it as soon as Apple approves it. Once downloaded and launched, it will automatically update the smartwatch over the air.
I got an early peek at the beta version, and the fuller range of alerts made me smile. It's been extremely useful not having to dig out my iPhone 5S whenever I got a notification. The downside: The stream of Tweets, Facebook messages, chats and other alerts set my arm on near-constant jitter mode. This, however, wasn't a tech fail; it was a user fail. I needed to tweak my settings to reduce the list of apps that shook my wrist. 

Assuming that the release version works the same way as the beta version, it's a pretty easy process: To get Pebble alerts for specific apps, you just enable them one by one in the Notifications Center and make sure they're set to Banner alert style. Then go to the Bluetooth setting. If the Pebble's paired, you'll see it in the list. Select it, and then switch on the "Show Notifications" toggle on the next screen. 
Beyond that, there have still been some issues. Sometimes email notifications would appear repeatedly. Or the Bluetooth connection would drop out and, upon connecting again, would dump an avalanche of previous items into the pipeline of alerts again. Pebble is aware of these bugs and already has some fixes in test mode, a company rep told me.
If Pebble can solve the pairing problems and make the experience more stable for those 190,000 Pebble owners—and if the SDK is sufficient to keep the developer community engaged and inspired—then Migicovsky and company might actually be on to something. 
Pebble is also upping its game in customer service. With its manufacturing woesin the rearview mirror, it's promising to put smartwatches in people's hands quickly, with free priority shipping (5­ to 7 days) worldwide for a limited time.
Combined, these moves all suggest that Pebble could have a lot more potential than it first appeared. “Pebble can be a platform that other people can build apps and even companies off of,” Migicovsky insists. Time—ahem—will tell.

How To Succeed In Wearable Tech—Lessons From GoPro And Pebbl


Wearable technology is still more hype than bona fide trend, but that hasn't slowed down companies around the world who desperately want to know what makes people want to slap gadgets on their bodies. Some advice from the folks who have actually had hits in this space might be in order.
The founders of GoPro and Pebble were happy to oblige on Wednesday at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference. Read on and learn.

Be Versatile

If there's one thing GoPro creator Nicholas Woodman is proudest of, it's the Red Bull Stratos space jumpby Felix Baumgartner last year. "He was standing on the edge of existence, jumping back down to Earth," Woodman said ofBaumgartner's leap from more than 128,000 feet in the air. The skydiver had a GoPro body cam strapped on under his visor, recording his first person point of view as he broke the sound barrier. This year, the camera company joined the Red Bull Signature Series—an NBC extreme-sports show—as an official partner. 
The pre-release Google Glass can only dream of such achievements at this point. (Though Glass has made its bones with at least one extreme stunt of its own.) Maybe that's why Woodman—who made Forbes' billionaires list earlier this year—isn't sweating over his would-be wearable tech competitor. 
Woodman also notes that Glass can only record from one vantage point. "Devices like Glass will do a terrific job of capturing the first-person perspective," he said. But that's just one of numerous possibilities, he added. Since GoPro mounts practically anywhere, it can record from numerous vantage points—whether lashed onto a boat in the ocean, a race car driver's dashboard or a stratospheric skydiver. 
Fred Armisen's brilliant Saturday Night Live sketch of a tech reporter covering Google Glass pokes fun at the device, spawning other comedy videos that underscore the limitations of using it to record objects, people and events. 
"Google Glass doesn't lend itself well to the world of GoPro, which is all about versatility," Woodman argued. 

Mesh Into People's Lives

Eric Migicovsky (featured, above) knows a thing or two about versatility. His Pebble e-paper smartwatch features an intentionally simple design intended to let its apps shine. The approach worked. Pebble was widely reported as Kickstarter's most successful campaign, and the device's popularity is largely credited for sparking the current race to make our wrists smart
Not that Migicovsky intends to position the Pebble as a smartphone killer. "The best computer you have is the one sitting in your pocket," he said. "Pebble and smartwatches should be things that take advantage of that. They should also take advantage of other devices [sitting around your house]."
Interesting sentiment—especially since the smartwatch category's newest entrant, the Galaxy Gear, comes from a company that makes everything from mobile devices and TVs to refrigerators. But there are a few obstacles standing in Samsung's way, and those are exactly what Migicovsky wanted to call out. 
"[A smartwatch] needs to mesh into your life; it needs to have a long battery life; and it needs to not be annoying," he explained. "It needs to just work in your life." Although Pebble has faced its own share of criticisms over late shipping on certain models, those jeers aren't inherent product flaws. Meanwhile, the chief complaints about the Galaxy Gear so far revolve around dismal battery life and a chunky girth that could get in users' way.
"These [are] overspec'ed machines," he continued, "but no one has really thought about how they fit into your life." That's what he thinks separates the Pebble. "It just works. That's the experience we really want to encourage."

Those betting big on wearable computing believe an assorted new crop of gadgets — mostly worn on the wrist or as eyewear — will transform the way in which we interact with the rest of our devices.

What was once only science fiction is now becoming a reality. Robots, touch screens and iPads could become passé as Google’s latest invention, Google Glass, begins to change the world forever.
Google’s wearable technology - already available for developers and due out for consumers in 2014 - has a built-in camera, a specialized navigation system, message notifications, voice commands and much more. But most alarming to the business community is the introduction of new Glass applications designed to project visuals in the user’s line of sight. Putting new information directly in front of users as they go about their daily tasks is sure to disrupt a wide variety of industries in both obvious and subtle ways.
This is not the first time Google has changed the way companies do business. Google has already replaced the Yellow Pages, stand-alone GPS systems and traditional email applications, not to mention laptop computers as we know them.
Although Google’s products often improve the way people live and work, they also pose threats to companies stuck in the status quo. Google Glass will be no different. Some industries will benefit from the device, while others will replaced and forgotten.
So how will wearable technology like Google Glass affect your industry?

1. YouTube Education

Whether it's cooking, auto mechanics or beauty tips, Google Glass will make distance learning more fun, interactive and accessible. Anyone can be a teacher - just by recording what they do. Glass lessons could video stream how to braid hair, perform an oil change or bake an exotic cupcake. YouTube already has videos like this, and they've only increased since the introduction of camera phones. Step-by-step videos and tutorials created using Google Glass promise to dominate YouTube with point-of-view How-To videos on virtually everything under the sun.

2. Aviation

Imagine pilots using Google Glass to receive turn-by-turn directions to their destination or nearest airport. With Glass as the ultimate heads-up display, coordinates and descriptions of nearby landmarks would be visible at all times, without having to look down at the control panel. Pilots could also get weather information on their Glass screen instead of having to call for updates. Glass could combine screen displays with voice commands to share detailed instructions from air traffic controllers.

3. Healthcare

Experts believe augmented reality will have many uses in the medical field, especially during complicated surgery. Imagine if doctors and nurses could prepare for incoming patients as they get ready for emergency surgery by receiving live video streams with instructions from paramedics heading to the ER. They could also get additional information on screen without looking away from what they're doing.
In addition, healthcare professionals could instantly locate and read patients’ medical records or test results with Google Glass. The device may even improve the way medicine is taught by allowing instructors to stream and share live procedures to residents and students from anywhere around the world.

4. Law Enforcement/Armed Forces

Google Glass could make law enforcement professionals feel like they’re in a futuristic thriller. Officers could document suspicious or criminal activity in progress and potentially use the video footage as evidence - not only on suspects, but to monitor potential police misconduct. Calling for additional back-up would be seamless, potentially speeding response times and saving lives.
Police and military academies could use Google Glass to demonstrate dangerous procedures, such as disarming a bomb. Streaming Glass video could help bomb disposal technicians get expert help in real time when facing unfamiliar threats. A company calledGolden-I has already created a similar headset for police officers that handles facial recognition, scans license plates and monitors vital signs.

5. Competitive Intelligence

Competitive intelligence practices could also become more insightful and ubiquitous. With Google Glass, professionals can record videos about everything they see and experience in a competitor’s store - including products, promotions and customer service practices - without attracting special attention. Google Glass could be used to obtain primary intelligence about focus groups, tradeshow booths and even secret investigations.
Similarly, consumers could record and share videos on social media about what they consume, what products and brands they choose and their real-world shopping experiences. This is first-hand customer intelligence - free of charge to everyone.
There’s no doubt Google Glass will give consumers and professionals unprecedented new power in many fields, and if it catches on, the implications will spread far and wide. Companies in its path will have to adapt or find themselves at grave risk.
