Writing a definition essay - Writing

Animal Testing

Naturally, humans tend to live longer Because of this idea, medicine has progressed hugely, especially in the 21st century. People are benefiting from surgeries and medications. However, although medicine has been developed dramatically, more diseases are still waiting for new treatments. That is why conducting animal testing became indispensable. How do you think about the animal testing? Have you ever heard the proverb? Animal testing, also known as animal experimentation, animal research, and in vivo testing, is “the use of non-human animals in experiments. Worldwide it is estimated that the number of vertebrate animals—from zebrafish to non-human primates—ranges from the tens of millions to more than 100 million used annually”(Wikipedia) As the experimentation on animals increased, especially the practice of extreme, so did criticism and controversy.
The ethical questions raised by performing experiments on animals are subject to much debate, and viewpoints have shifted significantly over the 20th century. Robert Gardner, explains has published widely on animal rights and environmental politics. He remain disagreements about which procedures are useful for which purposes, as well as disagreements over which ethical principles apply to which species. At first, “there is a powerful moral case against animal experimentation.” If people insist upon treating such humans as superior to animals merely on the grounds that they are human, without any other supporting argument, people are guilty of ‘speciesism’(Gardner, 37). Second, “If we insist upon granting rights to humans we should also grant them to animals.”(38) If people reject the idea that humans are superior then, provided that they are not prepared to sacrifice some members of their own species to benefit others, they are not permitted to do this to animals either.  Third, “animals possess rights.”(38) People ought to treat other species with respect, and this means thinking very hard before harming them for their benefit.
On the other side of the debate, supporters of the use of animals in
experiments, such as the Henry E. Heffner, known as the “The Symbiotic Nature of Animal Research”, argue that those in favor of animal testing held that experiments on animals were necessary to advance medical and biological knowledge. First, “it is mutualism, in which both parties benefit.” It has contributed to the reproductive success of both species and, conversely, has reduced the probability that either might become extinct.(Heffner, 39) Second, Animals far more successful and much more resistant to extinction than their wild ancestors, while simultaneously strengthening mankind’s ability to survive. Third, “Some animals ; cats and dogs, had already established mutualistic relationships with us, and there movement into the laboratory represents an expansion of this relationship.(42)”  One obvious survival strategy for chimpanzees, that have no close relationship with us outside the laboratory, would be expand their use of kin selection. It become essential to medical research, thus increasing their own ability to survive – the ability of humans.
I would like to ask you about the definition of animal testing. Is it too profound question? Then, let me rephrase the question. Do you think the decision of incurability patient in the emergency? Or at least was it the best option? I don’t think so and probably so does he.

Death Penalty

The death penalty is a very big issue. It often torments the minds of many people, and the question of it regularly arises both in private and in public discussion. It has significant effects on the way in which our societies develop, and on the manner in which we view the people within them. And it is clearly a topic that those who would claim to be serious thinkers should reflect upon very deeply before they come to any firm conclusions. There are two different opinions concerning this issue : for and against the death penalty, Thesis : What is your stance on the death penalty?
First, Dudley Sharp who believes the death penalty is still necessary to insists that it is saving innocent lives. It remains the most secure form of incapacitation, meaning that executed murderers do not harm and murder again. (“Dudley” 12) Also, Dudley says that life is considered even more precious. So, that is considered the severest sanction for the most horrible of crimes. (13)
On the other hand, The Women’s Bar Association of the State of New York (WBASNY) says the death penalty is cruel and unusual. So, the WBASNY believes it should be a leader in the movement against capital punishment. There are three reasons. First, it is impossible to draft a death penalty statute that is not subject to error. There is no system that free from mistakes, regardless of the efforts of legislators and the criminal justice system.(“WBASNY” 9) Second, capital punishment is racially discriminatory. By the United States Supreme Court, it found that those who killed whites were eleven times more likely to receive the death penalty than those who killed blacks. (10) Third, life in prison without parole is a sufficient sentence with serious impact. It believes that the severity of life in prison without parole merits the continuing provision of state funded services to the accused as currently provided by the Capital Defenders Office. Therefore, it strongly urge that abolition of the death penalty should not be a justification for cutting the budget of an office that ensures that the rights of minorities and the indigent are protected. In conclusion, WBASNY takes a clear position that an ever-increasing population of both this country and the world recognizes that capital punishment, no matter how it is administered, is always cruel, inhuman, and degrading. (11)
In my opinion, capital punishment, especially the death penalty must be executed exactly on atrocious criminals if based on the public agreement of society. Because the purpose of enforcing law is to keep people safe and criminals from breaking the law again and pursuing persistent stability of the community if there are social consensus and legally clear standard on this matter, I truly agree with the execution of the death penalty. And to get such things as inclusive agreement and rational foundation for the penalty, we should comprehend the features of the suspects and how the law affects the whole society. This is why death penalty should be allowed.

Temple Stay
Overnight trip to find out my true ego

It was a cold day when a spring rain fell down in April 2012. I was heading toward Kilsang-Sa(the temple of Kilsang) where I had applied for a Temple-stay program. I entered the temple with so much worry because the midterm exam was only three days away. Temple-stay is a program that I could experience temple life, rest my mind and learn traditional culture in temple. I could participate in this program by on-line application. If you search for information about Temple-stay on a portal site, you can find some temples region by region. The entry fee of Kilsang-Sa where I had applied was 50,000 Korean won(48 US dollars). And period of Temple-stay was from 12 oclock on Saturday to 10 oclock on Sunday. There was something I need to prepare before I taking part in this program. I had to take toiletries, a towel, socks, outer clothing, clothes, sneakers comfortable to wear and a personal cup with me.
At first, my specific memory of temple stay is Dado. Dado means ceremony of drinking tea. In Dado class, we learned the method of pouring boiled water into a small tea cup, tea-courtesy and the history of Korean tea. Pouring the water into the cup requires certain steps : 1. Pour boiled water into a water kettle and cool it down. 2. Then, open the cap of the kettle and put tea leaves. 3. Finally, pour boiled water that was poured into the kettle into the tea pot. Distribute the tea into three cups, do the same for two more times. Depending on a person, preference on flavor of the tea you can alter the time you brew it. The longer you brew the tea, the deeper the flavor it is. The correct courtesy drinking tea is not hard to follow. Tea cups and kettles should be handled with your right hand. And with your left hand, support the bottom of teacup and kettle from below. It can be stable.
Second, specific memory of temple stay is Meditation lecture. In meditation lecture, I learned how to meditate and position. The chief-monk directly taught us the way of meditation. And it has seven-order as steps. First, sit with correct position by gathering legs. Second, straighten your back. Third, bend your both shoulders back. Fourth, throw out your chest. Fifth, pull my chin as possible as you can. Sixth, roll up your tongue by half, and make your tongue touch palate slightly. Then finally, look to your front a little. It was very hard for me to straighten my waist and sit because I usually bend my back and shoulders on walking or sitting on chairs. However, I could feel sitting comfortable and have a state of balance after 30 minutes. I also could have times when I thought myself during this meditation class. I thought my present, past, future, worry, parents, friends, school calmly and deeply.
In my daily life, cities and modern society are fast, fast and fast and full of noise, machines and stuff. In contrast, there is some place silent, traditional and belonged to nature. I can experience Korean traditional beauty, learn courtesy and take a trip to. It is just temple-stay. At temple-stay, I am also able to get a time to look back on myself, which I could not do in daily life.

Analyzing problems and solutions essay

Immigration

The United State’s immigration policy has undergone great change since the turn of the 20th century. Many things have contributed to this change, such as political problems, poverty, lack of jobs, and in fact our changing policy. The countries affected by these problems may have changed, but the problems themselves have not. Immigrants who are poor and have a few jobs in their own countries come to America. There are many different groups of people that coming to this country for a better life. The United States government should better control the overpopulation, the economy, and the illegal immigrants in the United States.
The first reason is why the government change is to control the population. The population of the world is ever increasing. The United States is no exception to this trend. George J. Borjas indicates that “By the late 1990s, nearly one million persons entered the country legally each year and another 300,000 entered the country illegally”(99). Also, according to Wikepedia: “The current population of the United States is 200 million people. This year alone, one million immigrants will enter the United States, whether legally or illegally”(1). Some of those who evade justice for four years or more are granted amnesty, legal forgiveness, and are given U.S. citizenship. Allowing these immigrants to remain in the country takes a serious toll on the economic and social levels in the United States. The government should take a more severe approach to slowing down and eventually stopping immigration.
The second reason why the government change is to control the price. According to Dirk Chase Eldredge – author of Crowded Land of Liberty, “both legal and illegal, resulting from the amendments of 1965, has exated a tremendous price from the American people, paid in the coin of overcrowded schools, congested highways, deteriorating ecology and lagging infrastructure”(93). In addition, whenever people in America catch illegal immigrants crossing the borders, they should send them right back and that would be the end of the story. Instead they bring them to camps to wait until the government finds out what to do with them. With so many immigrants coming over everyday, the goverment lets people out of these camps and lets them into American society, so that Americans can fit the new people who are coming over here in the camps.
Another reason why the government change is to control the job and the illegal immigrants. It is estimated that “4 million illegal aliens are living in the U.S. right now”(Center for Immigration Studies). That means that the government has no idea who these people are or where they are. That is why the U.S. government needs to spend more money and stop immigrants at the border. If the United States didn't let any of these people in this country, people in America still would not have jobs. So it is not like America needs these people in the government. One suggests that “In Mexico 60 percent of its labor force is unemployed” (Center for Immigration Studies). So a lot of these people think that there are jobs for them in the U.S., but there aren't.
The government of the United States should allocate more funds for the purpose of hiring more border patrol guards. Money could be taken from the national defense fund to pay for more patrol vehicles and personnel. Another possible solution would be for the judicial system to take a more stern approach over issues concerning illegal aliens. Illegal immigrants attempting to sneak into the U.S. who are caught, should be immediately returned to their country of origin, no questions asked. This may seem like a harsh view to hold, but to keep the quality of living in the United States at the highest level, it is a view that more people, especially people in positions of power, need to hold.
